BAGHDAD (AP) – Iraqi officials say a shooting and a roadside bomb have killed five people west of Baghdad. Three of the dead were police.

The Wednesday attacks were among many in recent months targeting security forces and aimed at undermining the regime.

Police said gunmen in two cars sprayed a police checkpoint with bullets near Ramadi city in Anbar province, killing two policemen and two civilian bystanders. Three other policemen were wounded.

Ramadi, a former insurgent stronghold, is 115 kilometers (70 miles) west of Baghdad.

In the western suburbs of Baghdad, a policeman was killed and two others wounded when a roadside bomb blast hit their patrol, police said.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk reporters.
