SAN LORENZO (KRON) — The ping pong balls are drawn and California lottery officials are trying to determine if anyone in the Golden State or elsewhere has one the state’s first Powerball drawing.
We watched live on the KRON 4 News at 8:00 as the drawing, normally held in Florida, took place in the offices of the California Lottery in Sacramento.
The drawing comes after a frantic day at lottery retailers across the Bay Area and around the state. KRON 4’s Scott Rates spent much of the day at Kavenaugh Liquors in San Leandro where many players say they think they have a better chance of winning a jackpot than at other stores. That’s because of the store’s history of selling winning tickets.
Wednesday’s jackpot was worth $60 million. Scott talked with a lot of players many of whom love the fact that the lowest possible Powerball drawing is still worth $40 million.
Mathmaticians say your chance of winning the Powerball are microscopic at about 175 million to one. But for many of the people lined up to buy tickets, dreams were more important than cold hard math.
