Vigil for Richmond Shooting Victim Reminds Many of the Price of Violence

RICHMOND (KRON) — One of two men who survived a Richmond shooting that took the life of a 19 year old man say violence in the area is out of hand.

Several dozen people showed up Wednesday night for a vigil in honor of Dimarea Young. He was shot and killed Tuesday while taking part in a job training program.

Two other people suffered minor injuries in the same shooting. One of those victims attended Wednesday’s vigil.

“I was running at the time and I just got hit,” Kenneth Polter tells KRON 4’s J.R. Stone. “I saw something that’s going to traumatize me for the rest of my life because I didn’t know what was going to happen. I was just running down the street and I got hit with a bullet.”

Polter says Young was honestly trying to make something of his life.

“He was trying to get his life together,” Polter adds. “It’s out of hand, what happened. People make mistakes in their life and I guess sometimes people don’t want to see you do good. They want to bring up the old past or whatever. He didn’t deserve to be shot down in cold blood.”

Investigators say it does not appear this shooting in gang-related. If you know anything about this crime, contact Richmond police or your local authorities.
