VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. — A Calaveras County sheriff’s spokesman says investigators have ruled out a 44-year-old man accused of a trying to kidnap a toddler as a suspect in last week’s killing of an 8-year-old girl.
Sgt. Chris Hewitt said at a news conference Thursday evening that authorities found no link between Tuesday’s attempted kidnapping of a 15-month-old girl in Placerville and Saturday’s slaying of Leila Fowler in her home about 50 miles away in Valley Springs.
Hewitt says FBI agents are now assisting with the investigation into Leila’s death.
They are hoping a description of her assailant provided by her 12-year-old brother, who was home alone with Leila when she was stabbed to death, will provide more leads.
