OAKLAND (KRON) — Oakland is looking for a new police chief.

Chief Howard Jordan is announcing he’s stepping down for medical reasons.

“This morning I advised City Administrator Deanna Santana that, effective immediately, I am on medical leave and taking steps toward medical retirement,” the chief said in a written statement. “This decision has been difficult, but necessary.”

The statement doesn’t detail what medical issues Chief Jordan is facing.

Jordan was sworn in as Interim Chief in October of 2011 and was given the permanent job in February of last year.

During his time as Chief, Jordan has faced controversy over high violent crime rates in the city as well as how the police department has handled high profile issues including the Occupy Oakland movement.

It’s unclear at this time when the search for a new chief will get underway in earnest.
