Victim Dies in Hail of Gunfire That Sends Bullets Into Oakland Fire Station

OAKLAND – A victim was shot and killed in East Oakland tonight, police said.

Police responded to reports of 20 to 30 shots being fired in the 5000 block of Melrose Avenue at 8:56 p.m.

A victim was driven to a hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, police said.

A nearby fire station, Engine Company 18 at 1700 50th Ave., was hit by several bullets and had its windows shattered by gunfire, fire officials said.

No one was hurt at the fire station, police said.
