SAN QUENTIN (KRON) — “Night Stalker” Richard Ramirez, the convicted rapist and serial killer, has died of natural causes on California’s death row.
KRON 4’s Alecia Reid reports Ramirez died Friday morning in San Quentin. The exact cause of death has not been released.
San Quentin State Prison spokesman Lt. Sam Robinson says the 53-year-old died had recently been taken from death row to a hospital. No other details about the death were released.
Ramirez terrorized Southern California in the mid-80’s with a series of break-ins that led to murders and rapes. In 1989 a jury found him guilty of 13 counts of murder, five attempted murders, eleven sexual assaults and 14 burglaries and sentenced to death.

In 2006, the California Supreme Court upheld the death penalty for Ramirez.
San Quentin prison officials are due to release more details about his death later today.
