Bay Area Red Cross Volunteers Head to Colorado

Bay Area volunteers are heading to help with disaster relief in flood-stricken Colorado, the Red Cross announced today.

The nine Bay Area volunteers will join more than 250 trained Red Cross disaster volunteers who were deployed to Colorado during the weekend to help provide food and shelter to thousands of residents affected by floods that have hit the area since Thursday, spokeswoman Jennifer Sturm said.

The Red Cross estimated that as many as 18,000 homes in Boulder, Colo., and neighboring counties have been affected by the floods, which have killed eight people and left hundreds unaccounted for.

Bay Area volunteers working through the Red Cross will help oversee shelter operations, public affairs, logistics, technology services and emotional support, Sturm said.

“We have a lot of well-skilled people who are volunteers,” Sturm said.

To help support Red Cross relief effort in Colorado, donations can be made online at or by calling (800) RED-CROSS.

An automatic $10 donation can be made by sending a text to 90999.
