SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — At many schools and workplaces around the country there’s a wave of unexpected and unexplained “illnesses” going on. What those sick people are really doing today is staying home to play Grand Theft Auto V which was released at midnight this morning.
The latest installment of the video game franchise is set in a mythical version of Southern California where players can pretend to drive fast and commit a series of crimes and other activities.
It’s now been 16 years since the first GTA came out and the franchise has become a staple of American gaming. It’s also a big deal in the business world. One analyst says Rockstar Games, the makers of the game, could make $1 billion in sales just over the next month. Projections have 20-million copies sold in the next six months.
The fifth version of GTA is drawing critical praise, far from the criticism heaped on the game when it first came out.
