TECH REPORT: Square Trade Offers Affordable Gadget Warranties

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Let’s talk about that new gadget you got for the holidays. No one plans to drop or damage a device but it happens.

That new gadget you have, there is a good chance something will happen to it.

The warranties offered by the major retailers online or in stores are generally not worth the money. I advise against them.

But there is one independent third party online warranty company that I do recommend. They make it easy and affordable to protect your device. is a website that offers warranties for just about any gadget out there for roughly half the price of traditional warranties.

And their warranties cover problems that plague mobile devices like damage caused by drops, cracked screens, and water damage. Square Trade covers almost anything.

Their service works through the mail. You mail in your broken device and they repair it and send it back to you. If you they can’t repair it they will send you a new one.

They will repair or replace a device under warranty up to four times.

Square trade has a good reputation. It’s a hassle free easy to use warranty.

If you are clumsy or accident prone –or maybe have young children that tend to run off with your device — I think a square warranty is a good idea.

Repairs are very costly, but these warranties really pay off if you even need one repair over the course of the plan life.

Here’s some examples of their pricing:

2 year plan for any new iPhone or iPad is $99.
2 year plan for the kindle fire tablet or the Google Nexus 7 is $50.
The kindle Paperwhite e-reader is $29.
3 year plan for the ps4 is $54 and $70 for Xbox one.
