Jahi McMath: Judge Orders Teen To Remain On Life Support

OAKLAND (KRON) — The family of a 13-year-old girl declared brain dead after suffering complications from surgery at Children’s Hospital Oakland has obtained an extension of the temporary restraining order requiring the hospital to keep her on life support, the girl’s uncle said this afternoon.

Children’s Hospital Oakland will not be allowed to take Jahi McMath, an eighth-grade student at the E.C. Reems Academy of Technology and Arts in Oakland, off of life support until Jan. 7, extending the previous deadline set to expire at 5 p.m. today, according to Omari Sealey, Jahi’s uncle.

Ealier Monday afternoon, Sealey said that the family has located a licensed facility in the state of New York which has agreed to take to Jahi.

“We have also contracted with an air ambulance willing to take her from door to door. We have a doctor here in California who will be by her side throughout the transfer,” Sealy said.

“We have informed the defendants of this and provided them with documentation of the same and sworn affidavits. Despite this they have refused to agree to allow us to proceed in that manner,” Sealy said.

Jahi’s mother says she believes in miracles. The family has explored moving Jahi to at least three long-term care facilities. As of Monday morning it appeared all of those had fallen through.

Sealy said that McMath, an eighth-grade student at the E.C. Reems Academy of Technology and Arts in Oakland, is moving when her mother speaks. “We have video and our attorneys have just produced it to the hospital’s attorney. We have a pediatrician who has seen Jahi who has sworn that she is not dead,” Sealy said.
