SAN JOSE (KRON) — San Jose firefighters say they have knocked down the flames from a huge five-alarm warehouse fire at the Vintage Roof Tile warehouse on Julian Street near 28th.
Still authorities aren’t ready to say the fire is completely under control. Traffic on Highway 101 is also impacted because the smoke is visible from the freeway.
Fire officials say they will continue to dump water on the building for hours to come.
Rocketship Discovery Prep Elementary School parents are getting calls to let them know classes are cancelled for today because of the campus’ proximity to the fire. Empire Gardens Elementary is also closed for the day. Classes are open at Anne Darling Elementary and San Jose High despite power outages because of the fire.

PG&E now says it has cut power to 4,000 customers in the area.
A fire official tells KRON 4’s Will Tran the fire is burning inside a 120,000 square-foot metal building with a tar and gravel roof. As portions of the roof collapse, the tar is also catching on fire. More than 100 firefighters are now involved in this effort.
Firefighters say there are no known chemicals or hazardous materials inside the building. The focus now is to keep the flames from spreading to nearby warehouses.
Will says he’s hearing loud explosions coming from the warehouse. Firefighters say that’s likely from portions of the roof collapsing.
The CHP is urging commuters to keep their windows rolled up and to use the internal circulation on their air conditions to prevent smoke from entering the vehicle.
