Controversy Surrounds U.S. Sochi Figure Skating Selection

BOSTON (KRON) — When the U.S. Olympic figure skating team gathers in Sochi for the Winter Games, Mirai Nagasu won’t be part of the squad, despite finishing third in the trials.

Instead the selection committee is decided to put fourth place finisher on Ashley Wagner on the team.

In a tweet, Wagner expressed her excitement.

At first Nagusu had indicated she might appeal the decision then issued a statement backing down.

“I’m disappointed in the decision,” Nagasu says. “Though I may not agree with it, I have to respect the decision the federation made.”

U.S. Figure Skating officials say the trials aren’t the only measure for selecting the team.

“If you look at Ashley Wagner’s record and performance, she has the top credentials of any of our female skaters,” U.S.Figure Skating President Patricia St. Peter said. “We don’t use a single competition as the sole measurement for who should participate in the Olympic Winter Games.”

The figure skating events in Sochi are scheduled to begin on Febuary 6th.
