SAN LEANDRO — A worker who was killed when a piece of heavy equipment fell on him at a Volvo-owned company in San Leandro this morning was a 48-year-old
Castro Valley man, a state workplace safety official said.
The incident was reported at 9:31 a.m. at Volvo Construction Equipment and Services at 1944 Marina Blvd., fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.
California Department of Occupational Safety and Health spokesman Peter Melton said the man, a field service technician, was working under a front-end wheel loader that had been lifted up onto support stands when the equipment slipped and fell onto him.
Fire crews arrived and found the victim crushed beneath the equipment. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Knowles said.
Firefighters assisted personnel from the Alameda County coroner’s bureau in removing the body, Knowles said. Crews used a mechanical hoist to lift the equipment, she said.
According to Cal/OSHA records, the company has not previously been cited for any safety violations, Melton said.
No other injuries were reported in connection with the accident.
The coroner’s bureau has not yet released the worker’s name.
