Dad, 18, Arrested For Biting Off Infant Son’s Nose

FAIRFIELD (KRON) — An 18-year-old Fairfield man was arrested Thursday for biting off his son’s nose because he was frustrated with the baby’s crying, police said.

Fairfield Police Department received a call Thursday morning at about 8 a.m. from a “hysterical” female reporting that her child was bleeding from his nose. When officers arrived at an apartment on the 1000 block of Alaska Avenue, they found a one-month-old infant bleeding from the face.

The infant was taken to North Bay Medical Center for treatment but was later transferred to Oakland Children’s Hospital after doctors determined that the infant’s nose had been severed and the child had possible head trauma.

Doctors at Oakland Children’s Hospital determined that the infant had suffered a skull fracture, a brain hemorrhage, and one third of the child’s nose had been severed off. The severed piece was recovered and brought with the baby to the hospital.

The child is currently in stable condition, police said.

“It’s a very unusual case,” said Sgt. Troy Oviatt. “It’s disturbing, it was gruesome.”

“It was a very difficult scene and a very difficult investigation for the officers who were involved,” Oviatt said.

Investigators determined that the infant’s father, Joshua Cooper, had bitten the child’s nose off out of frustration from the infant crying. It is still unclear how the infant sustained the skull fracture and brain hemorrhage.

Cooper was alone with the boy at the time of the incident. Officials said that the infant’s 17-year-old mother and numerous other family members were in the residence when police arrived.

The teen was arrested and booked into Solano County Jail for child cruelty and aggravated mayhem. Bail has been set at $750,000.
