RICHMOND, Va. (KRON) — A teenage boy has been detained by police in Richmond in connection with an alleged assault of a young girl and the murder of her little brother.
Police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said the teenager was being medically evaluated Friday, and police planned to charge him in the attacks.
Officials on Friday identified the deceased boy as 8-year-old Martin Cobb.
Neighbors told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the boy died trying to protect his sister from the attacker.
“To have the courage to defend his sister as if he was a grown man,” neighbor Sudan Aunu told the newspaper Friday morning. “His sister is alive today because of him.”
Richmond Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Mary E. Langer said she was told by police that the boy suffered severe head trauma. Neighbors said they believed Martin was hit in the head with a brick, the Times-Dispatch said.
Pastor Theodore Hughey of the Abundant Life Church said the siblings were inseparable and always in and out of the church. He said the girl is 12, according to the Times-Dispatch.
Neighbor Markeita Boyd described the boy as a “a happy child, full of life, full of joy. The neighborhood loved him. He wasn’t even two feet tall.”
Boyd spent some time with the children’s mother and said she is “very very distraught.”
“She was devoted. You didn’t see her without her children.”
The teen may have been known to the siblings, neighbors said.
