Worker Killed at San Mateo Construction Site Identified

SAN MATEO — The worker who fell to his death Tuesday at a residential construction site in San Mateo has been identified as 54-year-old Elias Vera of Fairfield, according to the San Mateo County coroner’s office.

San Mateo Deputy Fire Chief John Healy said Vera died at the scene despite life-saving measures by paramedics.

The accident was reported at 3:40 p.m. at the site of the former Bay Meadows racetrack in the 2900 block of McCown Avenue.

Vera landed on his head after falling 15 feet from the top of a wall during construction of a townhouse building, according to San Mateo police.

The construction site is run by TRI Pointe Homes, which has a sales office at 401 Mahoney Way in San Mateo.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the incident, according to Cal/OSHA spokesman Greg Siggins.
