SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A viral photo of a teen straddling a dead shark that washed up on a beach in Australia is prompting warnings from officials and lots of bashing on social media.
A photo of the bikini-clad girl that was posted on the web last week shows 19-year-old Amber Van Kampen mounting the 10-foot carcass.
A second photo shows the teen spooning with the dead creature.
Social media reaction has been mixed – some have been calling the photo opportunity a fun snapshot comparing it to a fisherman posing with his catch. Others are accusing Van Kampen of being disrespectful to the dead animal.
“The reaction has been crazy. I didn’t expect people to be so mad about it,” the bio medical science student told Sunshine Coast Daily.
“It was a joke. I thought it was a cool opportunity and I didn’t mean any disrespect. I love animals.”
An official with Australia’s Underwater World Sea Life Mooloolaba, Kate Willson, is warning people to avoid sharks that may wash up on beaches because they may still be alive.
The carcass was later buried deep in the sand by authorities, according to a Sunshine Coast Daily report.
What do you think of these photos of the teenager posing with the dead shark? Fun, dumb or move on?
