SANTA CLARA (KRON) — It’s official, Santa Clara will be the host of Super Bowl 50, not Super Bowl L.
The NFL says it is making a one-time change to its policy of using Roman numerals to identify its annual championship game.
Members of the Santa Clara organizing committee first raised the issue of the name change because of the widespread association of the letter “L” with “loser” in Internet parlance.
Santa Clara is due to host the big game at Levi’s Stadium in early 2016.
This is not a permanent change. The league says it will go back to using Roman numerals for Super Bowl LI in 2017 in Houston. The first big game named with a letter instead of a number came in January, 1971 when the Baltimore Colts defeated the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V.
