Wear a KKK Hood, Get Paid $215K

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Los Angeles will pay $215,000 to a man who was tossed out of a city commission meeting for wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood.

City lawmakers voted Wednesday to settle the free-speech lawsuit by Michael Hunt.

The Venice-area resident, who is black, wore the hood and a T-shirt with a racial slur during a 2011 meeting of Board of Recreation and Parks commissioners.

His lawyer, Stephen Rohde, says Hunt has worn the outfit at other city meetings to protest perceived government discrimination.

Hunt was escorted out of the parks meeting and cited for disturbing a public assembly. He was not prosecuted.

Councilman Bernard Parks says the city chose to settle the lawsuit because it might have faced huge legal fees in a trial.
