SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A viral photo juxtaposing an African-American single mother and a Caucasian couple on the product packaging for a baby carrier is stirring outrage on social media.
Many internet users are calling the images on the product box racist and offensive. The photo shows one box featuring a smiling African-American woman holding her baby in a sling.
But right next to that box is a similar product from the same manufacturer, Baby K’Tan, showing a Caucasian woman holding her baby with a Latino man standing behind her.
The widely circulated photo garnered an angry response from many Twitter users. @rebeccajackart said, “Black people when we support marketing from companies like @BabyKtan we disempower ourselves and give our money to people who don’t honor us.”
The company issued a responses that saying they have a total of five products, and there are four boxes that have individual mothers with their babies on the front, including African American and Caucasian women.
“Furthermore, the box bearing the African American woman was inaccurately priced lower than the box with the Caucasian couple,” the company says.
“We wholeheartedly reject any false, unfounded and baseless claims of discrimination as depicted in the above misrepresentation.”
Not everyone was critical of the photo. @TheBabyGuyNYC shouted out, “Hey @BabyKtan, I’ve got your back. You’ve ALWAYS had diversity in your advertising & this has been blown WAY out of proportion.”
