SHANNON CO., Missouri (KRON) — A manhunt is underway in the Missouri Ozarks after an accused killer escaped while watching Fourth of July fireworks.
Investigators say a jailer decided to let nine inmates of the Shannon County jail out of their cells and outside the jail so they could watch the holiday fireworks display.
Witnesses say Jason McClurg took off soon after the fireworks started exploding.
“One of the inmates told me he wasn’t running real fast,” Sheriff Steven Blunkall tells TV Station KY3. “But he went around the court house and the other inmates thought he went off the steps.”
The deputy has been fired.
McClurg was arrested in May in the murder of his wife. Prosecutors say his mixed prescription drugs with Kool-Aid and then convinced his wife to drink the concoction after telling her their toddler child had made it for her.
