UPDATE: 4-Alarm Grass Fire Prompts Evacuations And HWY 12 Closure

FAIRFIELD – A four-alarm grass fire off of state Highway 12 in Fairfield has prompted the evacuation of nearby homes and shut down the roadway in both directions, according to a Fairfield Fire Department dispatcher.

The fire was reported around 1:50 p.m. in a grassy area off of Highway 12 near Beck Avenue, according to the dispatcher.

As the blaze grew, nearby homes on James Street were evacuated, the dispatcher said.

The fire has also prompted the shutdown of Highway 12 from Beck Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and use alternate routes.
