Two teenage girls from Santa Cruz were killed when their car veered into the path of an oncoming boom truck near Moss Landing last Friday morning, according to the Monterey County coroner’s office.

Aaliyah Giselle Luna Perez, 16, and Tianna Rose Croghan, 15, were headed south on state Highway 1 near Jensen Road at 6:52 a.m. Friday when their 2001 Hyundai veered into oncoming traffic and hit a crane-carrying boom truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The truck driver tried to swerve away but could not avoid the head-on collision. Croghan and Perez, who were not wearing seatbelts during the crash, were pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the girls was ejected from the car when it crashed while the other girl remained inside the vehicle. The truck driver was not injured, according to the CHP.
