NEWARK (KRON) — Newark Avenue remains closed during the Monday morning commute after a large garbage truck hit a car and knocked down some power lines.
Newark police tell KRON 4’s Terisa Estacio the Waste Management truck was travelling southbound on Newark Avenue at about 4:30 a.m. when it hit a parked car and came to a rest against a tree.
The force of the accident knocked some hot power lines down into the street. PG&E crews have since removed the power lines and police have hauled away the parked car. The garbage truck remains on the scene and Alameda County firefighters are containing a small diesel spill.
The driver of the truck sustained only minor injuries. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
We’re tracking a hot spot in Newark where police are urging people to avoid the area of Newark Blvd and Lafayette Ave. because of the accident.
