OAKLAND (BCN) — A Bay Area maintenance technician won $1.3 million on a $2 lottery ticket he purchased at an Oakland supermarket, the California Lottery reported today.
Anthony Smith had cashed his paycheck and was buying groceries at Gazzali’s Supermarket at 7000 Bancroft Avenue in East Oakland when he decided to purchase three of the $2 Scratchers tickets on a whim.
The last ticket Smith uncovered revealed the word “LIFE”, making it worth $1.3 million, according to California Lottery’s statement.
Smith said he is overwhelmed but has decided to take the lump sum amount, which comes out to $750,000 before federal taxes.
He said he is planning on purchasing his first home and may start a laundromat business with his winnings.
