SACRAMENTO (KRON) — The Bay Area is getting three new CHP canine teams and you won’t be paying for them.
Three of the nine new canine teams will be coming to work in CHP’s Golden Gate Division. The dogs and their handlers with whom they will be paired for life have just completed an eleven-week training course. In addition the teams will be required to train for eight hours a week for the rest of the dog’s career.
The three new teams doubles the number of canine units working in the Golden Gate Division to six.
Taxpayers don’t cover any of the costs of the dogs training or upkeep. Instead state officials say all of the money comes from assets seized from criminal operations.
