Philippines Welcomes 100 Millionth Citizen

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine officials have welcomed the birth of their country’s 100 millionth citizen with a cake, hope and worries about how their poor Southeast Asian nation can help ensure a decent life for its swelling population.

Juan Antonio Perez III of the government’s Commission on Population says a baby named Chonalyn was born at 12:06 a.m. Sunday at the government-run Jose Fabella hospital in Manila, pushing the country’s estimated population to the milestone figure.

Philippine health officials presented a cake, infant clothes and other gifts to Chonalyn, who was fondly cradled by her smiling mother.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona said it would be “a challenge for the government to provide every child the opportunities to live a quality life.”
