SAN DIEGO (KRON) — A woman was killed and another was seriously injured after their small plane crashed into a San Diego shopping center parking lot on Wednesday night, police said.
According to a report on KUSI, the private plane clipped a department store just west of Montgomery Field and crashed into an adjacent commercial parking lot.
The Mooney M20 crashed in the 7800 block of Othello Avenue in Kearny Mesa at about 5:30 p.m. after a landing attempt at the municipal airport went awry, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and Federal Aviation Administration.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguished a small blaze caused by the crash, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said.
Medics transported the pilot, a woman in her 50s, and her passenger to a trauma center for treatment of “major” injuries, he said.
Two witnesses who suffered minor injuries helping get the women out of the wrecked aircraft were treated at the scene.
A witness told NBC San Diego the single-engine aircraft clipped the roof of a Target store and a utility pole before hitting the ground.
