Oakland Mayor Jean Quan Helps Elderly Couple Standing Outside Burning Home Thursday

OAKLAND (BCN) — Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and her neighbors aided an elderly couple standing outside of their burning home in the Oakland hills on Thursday morning.

The fire was reported around 9:20 a.m. in the 1800 block of Brentwood Road in the city’s Oakmore neighborhood, an Oakland fire dispatcher said.

Quan said she lives in the area and her staff picked her up for her first meeting of the day when they passed by the fire.

In her purple suit, Quan approached a woman in the middle of the street who pointed to the burning home and escorted her farther away from the blaze.

The first thoughts Quan said ran through her mind were if anyone had called 911 and if the residents were safely evacuated from the home.

The woman’s husband was also outside of the home and he moved a car from the garage as the fire burned, Quan said.

Quan and her neighbors helped move vehicles away from the narrow street to make room for fire trucks, she said.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke from the home’s attic and second floor, according to the fire department.

The blaze was under control by about 9:50 a.m. The elderly couple was not injured but did seem shocked by the fire, according to Quan.

Quan thanked the firefighters for their swift response. She called on Oakland hills residents to be aware of any red flag warnings issued for the area.
