SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Firefighters are making a second attempt to enter an abandoned hotel that’s been burning for much of the afternoon Monday.
The fire at the site of the former Renoir Hotel on Market Street broke out just after noon. Firefighters entered the building but then backed out when they heard explosions they feared came from propane tanks stored inside the eight-story building.
Fire crews then spent hours pouring water onto the building from the outside before preparing to re-enter it mid-afternoon.
Seven construction workers were treated for smoke inhalation when the blaze began.
The cause of the fire remains unclear at this point.
Market Street and surrounding roads remain closed while the fire continues to burn.
