SANTA ROSA (KRON) — Sometimes you just need a day.
That appears to be the case for Sonoma County Jesse Eagle Wilmes.
Authorities say Wilmes escaped from the county jail at about 2:25 Saturday afternoon by running out an open gate.
Canine units and sheriffs deputies searched the area around the jail for several hours but couldn’t find the escaped man.
A little more than 24 hours later, deputies say Wilmes walked back into the jail and turned himself in.
It’s unclear where he was or what he was doing during the day or so that he was gone. He had been in jail since March for felony grand theft of a motor vehicle, receiving known stolen property, possession of narcotics and violation of probation. Now he’s back inside facing another charge of escape.
