LOUISIANA (KLFY) — Darrell Shelvin doesn’t seem too concerned with the charge looming over his head. Recently, the 23-year-old began updating his Facebook page, even changing his profile picture, exactly one week after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Shelvin allegedly shot and killed 37-year-old Orthello Moore, Jr. on July 28.
Hours later, police named Shelvin as a suspect, but have been unable to locate him. The murder suspect may be sharing more that his recent activities on social media; he may also be sharing with police his exact location.
Paul Mouton, Lafayette Police spokesman said, “It’s information that we have taken in and we are using as a tool in an attempt to locate him .”
Social media has become a top tool in helping law enforcement track friends, families and the suspects themselves in a variety of crimes.
“You have that, you have them texting, Instagram, putting information on any type of social media, leaves clues as to how to locate them,” said Mouton
One update contained an interesting choice words. On July 31, just four days after Shelvin was accused of killing Moore, his page post reads that he is prepared to “beat this murder rap.” While Shelvin’s post include criptic messages and pictures posted on
August 4th of what appears to be a fresh tattoo, the updates contain little context as to where he has been hiding. Police, however, said information is embedded is his uploads.
“He did put some information based off of the incident that occurred and the allegations set against him . Someone can post on Facebook from anywhere,” Mouton said. “So there are some different avenues, some different techniques that we use as far as for trying to locate him based on the post that he made on Facebook.”
Picture “likes” and mobile uploads aside, the Lafayette Police have a message for the suspect.
“Probably the best avenue is to turn himself in.”
