FREMONT (KRON) — A new health textbook for Fremont Ninth Graders is the subject of a petition drive underway organized by some parents.
More than 1,200 people had signed the petition by Wednesday afternoon calling for the district to change its mind about the book called “Your Health Today.”
Fremont school trustees voted to approve the new textbook based on a unanimous recommendation of the district’s health teachers.
The petition says the textbook “exposes youth to sexual games, sexual fantasies, sexual bondage with handcuffs, ropes, and blindfolds, sexual toys and vibrator devices, and additional instruction that is extremely inappropriate for 13 and 14 year-old youth.”
According to the organizers of the petition, the author of the textbook has said it was written with college students, not high school freshmen in mind.
The parents also say they and other members of the community should have been involved in the search for a new textbook.
School officials concede the book deals with difficult topics including masturbation, teen pregnancies, sexually-transmitted diseases, and substance abuse. They say talking honestly with kids about these subjects is the best way to avoid these problems.
