Section Of Sixth Street in Berkeley Shut Down For ‘Police Activity’

BERKELEY (KRON) — A suicidal person who was locked in a storage facility in Berkeley Wednesday afternoon is in police custody, a police spokeswoman said.

The incident shut down the area surrounding the University of California at Berkeley athletic storage facility near Sixth and Virginia streets.

Coats said police were able to evacuate the staff, leaving the distraught man inside. Police hostage negotiators talked him out at about 3:10 p.m., she said.

At about 12:50 p.m., police issued a notice advising people to avoid the area of the 1600 block of Sixth Street, between Cedar and Jones streets.

The area has been reopened.
