A highway worker was killed and another was severely injured when a driver veered off the road on U.S. Highway 101 in Redwood City this morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Dee Di Benedetto, 38, of San Jose, was driving a black Mercedes when she struck Jimmie Lee Ballard, 63, of East Palo Alto, and Mark Santos, 24, of San Mateo, according to the CHP.

The crash was reported at 11:05 a.m. south of Woodside Road on southbound Highway 101, CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

Benedetto veered off of the road toward a nine-person Job Train crew that was picking up litter along the right shoulder and hit Ballard and Santos, CHP officials said.

Santos was pronounced dead at the scene and Ballard was taken to Stanford Hospital with major injuries, according to the CHP.

Benedetto was also taken to Stanford Hospital with minor injuries.

The collision is under investigation and it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved, CHP officials said.
