SAN RAFAEL (KRON) — Actor and comedian Robin Williams was found slightly suspended in a seated position with a belt around his neck, officials with the Marin County Sheriff’s department say.
Assistant Chief Coroner Lt. Keith Boyd says Williams’ personal assistant forced their way into his bedroom late Monday morning after failing to rouse him.
Boyd says the body of the 63-year-old comedian was exhibiting signs of rigor mortis. Authorities are still trying to determine an exact time of death.
“Williams wife last saw her husband at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday when she went to bed in the home on St. Thomas Way in unincorporated Tiburon. It’s unlear when Robin Williams went retired to a different room in the house,” Boyd says.
The coroner says he found superficial wounds on the side of Williams left wrist that may have been caused by a pocket knife but that was not the cause of death. Investigators say suicide by asphyxia is the preliminary cause of death.
Authorities say they are not discussing whether a note was left. They do say he had recently sought treatment for severe depression.
