SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) A lawyer for the family of Alex Nieto will file a federal civil rights lawsuit Friday afternoon against the San Francisco Police department for March’s officer-involved shooting of the 28-year old man.
Family members and supporters gathered Friday morning near the scene of the shooting in Bernal Heights Park for a sunrise service in Nieto’s honor.
Police say they encountered Nieto back in March after getting calls of a man with a gun. Officers say they found the man with an object in hand and ordered him to drop it. Instead police say Nieto pointed the device at them and so they opened fire killing him. Investigators say Nieto was actually holding a stun gun.
Family members say they’re still trying to find out the names of the officers involved in the shooting and to see changes in policy for training officers.
Another rally is set for midday Friday starting in Bernal Heights and marching to the federal building where the lawsuit will be filed.
