Vallejo Man Arrested for Home Invasion Robbery and Elder Abuse

VALLEJO (BCN) — Broken glass containing DNA lead to the arrest of a suspect in a Petaluma home invasion robbery last year, a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office sergeant said.

Two men broke into the home of an 86-year-old woman on Stage Gulch Road in Petaluma on May 14, 2013, Sgt. Cecile Focha said.

The suspects shattered a window to get into the home where they stole money, credit cards, keys, a purse and the female victim’s cell phone, Focha said.

Sheriff’s deputies collected the pieces of broken glass for evidence. Detectives found evidence on the glass and sent it to the Department of Justice for DNA analysis, Focha said.

In May the DOJ determined the person who left the evidence was 22-year-old Daniel Ortega Ornelas Jr. of Vallejo, Focha said. Detectives then issued a $250,000 arrest warrant for Ornelas.

Vallejo police detectives stopped Ornelas in a vehicle on Aug. 21, and a records check revealed he was wanted in Sonoma County. Ornelas was on probation in Solano and Napa counties for drug possession and possession of stolen property, Focha said.

Ornelas was booked in the Solano County jail, and staff there notified the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office of his arrest, Focha said.

Ornelas admitted to the Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies he was inside the victim’s house at the time of the home invasion robbery, Focha said.

Ornelas was then booked in the Sonoma County jail for first-degree burglary, robbery and elder abuse. He was scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in Sonoma County Superior Court.

Detectives informed the robbery victim one of the two suspects had been arrested, Focha said.
