7-Foot-Deep Gas Line Broken By Digging Crew

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Jose firefighters evacuated a building near a gas line break this afternoon, fire officials said.

The break was reported at 12:35 p.m. near the corner of Schallenberger Road and Ridder Park Drive.

PG&E responded to the break, which was caused by a crew digging up a tree in an empty lot hitting a 4-inch gas line, PG&E spokeswoman Monica Tell said.

As of 4:30 p.m., PG&E crews were still trying to control the flow of gas as the break was 7 feet deep and they had to dig the line out before they could cap it, Tell said.

They expected to have the gas flow stopped by 5 p.m. and could then begin work on repairs, Tell said.
