SEATTLE (KRON) — If you stream Tom and Jerry cartoons on Amazon Prime, the shows will come with a warning that the cartoon might be considered racist.
The instant video service will display a notice that the cat and mouse animated films contain ” “ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society.”
Amazon’s warning will tell consumers “such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.”
Tom and Jerry cartoons, most of which were produced between 1940 and 1947 by William Hannah and Joseph Barbera, featured an African-American character called “Mammy Two Shoes”. That character’s face was only shown once.
Civil rights activists and others have long been critical of the maid’s portrayal in the cartoons.
