DECISION 2014: Incumbent Kamala Harris Leads Attorney General Race

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Democratic Attorney General Kamala Harris was leading her little-known Republican challenger in a bid for a second term as California’s top attorney.

Harris led self-described political novice Ron Gold with 54 percent of the vote Tuesday in early returns.

The 69-year-old Gold took an unlikely stand during his campaign in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana.

Harris has said California should wait and watch how Colorado resolves issues that arise from its legalization of pot.

The 50-year-old Harris is a former two-term San Francisco district attorney and was the first black woman elected as district attorney in California when she won that seat in 2003.

A personal friend of President Barack Obama, she is widely expected to run for higher office if she secures a second term as attorney general.
