PETALUMA — Petaluma police and firefighters responded this morning to a vegetation fire Petaluma caused by an improvised explosive device in northeast Petaluma.
The fire was in a creek bed south of the walking path near Culpepper and Baranof drives, police said.
A caller reported hearing an explosion and saw a fire around 7:50 a.m., Sgt. Paul Gilman said.
Police found a burning purse in the creek bed and the explosive device.
Officials say the crude explosive device was pieced together with household items including a fluid.

“A lot of people were walking with pets but there were no children going to school,” Gilman said.
Anyone who witnessed the explosion and fire is asked to call police.
