Explosive Device Causes Vegetation Fire in Petaluma

PETALUMA — Petaluma police and firefighters responded this morning to a vegetation fire Petaluma caused by an improvised explosive device in northeast Petaluma.

The fire was in a creek bed south of the walking path near Culpepper and Baranof drives, police said.

A caller reported hearing an explosion and saw a fire around 7:50 a.m., Sgt. Paul Gilman said.

Police found a burning purse in the creek bed and the explosive device.

Officials say the crude explosive device was pieced together with household items including a fluid.

Police extinguished the small fire and the Petaluma fire marshal was called to investigate, police said. Evidence was collected and is being
processed.

“A lot of people were walking with pets but there were no children going to school,” Gilman said.

Anyone who witnessed the explosion and fire is asked to call police.
