Hayward Man Identified as Person Shot and Killed by Police Friday in Fremont Park

FREMONT (KRON) — Authorities are still looking for more potential witnesses and evidence into what prompted a man later shot and killled by police to allegedly brandish a knife at some kids at a neighborhood park.

Detectives are identifying the dead man as 48-year old Zaki Shinwary of Hayward.

Shinwary died after one police officer shot him with a taser and another fired his service weapon at the man at Harvey Community Park on Lake Arrowhead Avenue.

Investigators say it appears Shinwary also encountered other people in addition to allegedly pulling the knife on the children.

“We believe he was in the neighborhood and other individuals may have encountered him, not necessarily with the knife,” said police spokeswoman Officer Geneva Bosques.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s office is coordinating the investigation into the fatal shooting.
