SAN JOSE (KRON) — The final journey of the Freedom Train is filled to capacity.
For the last time ever, the train is making its Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday trek from San Jose to San Francisco.
Dr. King’s widow, Coretta Scott King, came up with the idea of the freedom train to celebrate her husband’s legacy of non-violent civil disobedience. The tradition spread across the country but slowly died out. The annual trip from the South Bay to the City is the last of the tradition.
KRON 4’s Terisa Estacio reports many people riding the final freedom train want their children to understand the importance of what Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement accomlished.
