Oklahoma’s State Vegetable is a Fruit, Lawmaker Says

OKLAHOMA CITY (KRON) — There’s just one problem with the Watermelon being the Official Vegetable of Oklahoma, a state lawmaker says. Watermelons are fruits, not vegetables.

Sen. Nathan Dahm is finding it’s not so easy to repeal a state vegetable, even when the organism in question doesn’t qualify as a vegetable.

The folks in Rush Springs, where the annual Watermelon Festival is held, say tourism has gone up since the vegetable designation was achieved eight years ago.

Another complication, Oklahoma already has a state fruit, the strawberry.

Dahm says he’s looking into naming the Watermelon the official state melon or seasonal fruit but it’s unclear if the people in Rush Springs will go for such a compromise.
