Quadruple Homicide Victim Yalani Chinyamurindi Remembered

San Francisco (KRON) — A community is reeling after a quadruple homicide took the lives of four young men in Hayes Valley on January 9th. The victims were found shot in a double parked Honda on Page Street near Laguna Street around 10pm. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspects are still at large, according to police.

The four victims were identified as Manuel O’Neal, 22, Harith Atchan, 21, David Saucier, 20 and Yalani Chinyamurindi, 19.

Yalani Chinyamurindi was on break from his job at Benihana, and was en route to cash a check to help his mother pay for rent. He had no criminal record.

Chinyamurindi was a student at Gateway to College, and was set to graduate this spring. His loss is deeply felt among the staff and students at Gateway. He is remembered as an articulate orator, with high moral fiber.

“There was something about that boy that was impeccable,” said Gateway to College Wellness Coordinator Vanessa Marrero, who worked closely with Chinyamurindi. “he radiated charisma that influenced. He could drive a conversation as well as silence a room” she said.

Chinyamurindi participated Wellness Service Learning All Star Project, which connected students to the business community through workshops and internships with Fortune 500 companies.

With so much opportunity, Chinyamurindi still carried the burden of socio-economic hurdles. On November 17th, a counselor at Gateway to College, Trevor Smyth noticed Chinyamurindi had missed a class. When Smyth asked about it, Chinyamurindi explained that he needed to meet his immediate financial needs and gain work experience. Smyth acknowledged his situation, but encouraged him to come back.

A week later, Chinyamurindi was back school.

“That spoke volumes,” said Smyth.

As the community tries to make sense of this violence, they are left with more questions than answers.

A fund has been set up for the funeral expenses for Yalani Chinyamurindi, which will take place Saturday. To contribute please visit http://www.gofundme.com/yalani.
