Transbay Transit Center Project To Start I-80 Fremont Street Off-Ramp Demolition

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Transbay Transit Center Project officials announced late night closures of the westbound I-80 Fremont Street.

The late night closures of the Harrison, Fremont, and Essex are set to begin Thursday, Feb. 4, and continue intermittently throughout the month. The agency has listed alternate routes for motorists to use during the closures.

Crews are demolishing part of the westbound I-80 Fremont Street off-ramp to make way for the Transit Center’s new designated bus ramp. Construction flaggers and SFPD will be assigned to assist with traffic control, according to the agency.

“Safety and traffic regulations dictate the need for demolition work like that being performed on the Freemont Street off-ramp to be conducted during off-hours,” the agency said.

The Fremont, Essex, and Harrison street off-ramp will be partially closed from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4th and Thursday, Feb. 5.

The new Transbay Transit Center will replace the former Transbay Terminal in downtown San Francisco with a modern transit hub, according to the agency.

“Extending just south of Mission Street from Second to Beale streets, the Transit Center will connect eight Bay Area counties and the State of California through 11 transportation systems: AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit, Greyhound, Muni, SamTrans, WestCAT Lynx, Amtrak, Paratransit and California’s future High Speed Rail from San Francisco to Los Angeles/Anaheim,” the agency said.
