MARIN (KRON) — The Sonoma County Sheriff’s helicopter was dispatched to help make a dramatic rescue of a distressed kayaker at Dillion Beach in Marin County on Thursday afternoon.
Crews arrived on the scene at about 3:21 PM and found a ten foot long kayak about 300 yards off of the mouth of Tomales Bay.
Authorities located a single male occupant in the water hanging on to the kayak. The crew aboard the helicopter Henry 1 advised a nearby Coast Guard vessel of the kayaker’s location.
The kayaker was safely equipped to handle the conditions but was too exhausted to safely paddle back to shore in the heavy surf, according to officials.
“Due to his location in shallow water and breaking surf, access would have been difficult and delayed by boat. The Henry 1 crew elected to configure the helicopter for a 100 foot long-line rescue and make contact with the kayaker,” officials said.
The man was safely rescued and was transported to an area hospital by Bodega Bay Fire Ambulance.
