ALAMEDA (KRON) — The Alameda County Sheriff’s office on Thursday said the man arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl in the toy aisle of a Hayward store had recently been released from prison after serving time for a similar offense.
Carlyle Villazon, 33, was arrested in Union City at 3:11 p.m. on Wednesday in connection with Sunday’s incident at the 99 Cents Only store at 2088 Mission Boulevard.
Authorities linked Villazon to the alleged sexual assault because he was wearing a monitoring device on his ankle due to his status as a high-risk sex offender, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly.
Villazon was recently released from state prison after serving time for his conviction for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl Walmart store at 1919 Davis St. in San Leandro on Dec. 10, 2010.
In Sunday’s case, the girl and her mom were shopping at the 99 Cents Only when the suspect grabbed her and forced his hand into her pants, Kelly said.
The man approached the child while she was momentarily separated from her mother, Kelly said.
According to deputies, the suspect told the girl, “Don’t tell anybody.”
Kelly says the man ran from the store after the assault. The store’s surveillance cameras did not record the attack but they may have captured the man entering and exiting the building.
San Leandro police said that in 2010, the 8-year-old victim left her mother’s side to find her brother. When the girl returned she was in tears. She told her mom that a man had touched her inappropriately.
Villazon was detained by two good Samaritans until officers arrived and arrested him.
Villazon wasn’t a registered sex offender at the time but he had a prior arrest history for traffic violations and making terrorist threats, according to San Leandro police.
